On February 17, 2025, SMART India Foundation conducted an impactful Rabies Awareness session at Hajiessa Hajimoosa Memorial High School, Mattancherry, as part of its ongoing commitment to community health education. The class, led by public health promoter Mr. Renjith K. Joy, aimed to equip students with vital knowledge about rabies, an often fatal but entirely preventable disease. Through an engaging presentation, Mr. Joy explained the modes of rabies transmission, particularly through bites and scratches from infected animals, and outlined early warning signs in both animals and humans. The session strongly emphasized practical prevention strategies such as responsible pet vaccination, avoiding interaction with stray animals, and the urgency of seeking immediate medical care following potential exposure. On 18th January 2025, SMART India Foundation hosted a vital session for teenage girls at Mukkola Anganwadi, focusing on the dangers of child marriage and the protection laws under the POCSO Act. The girls learned about the legal marriage age, the risks of early marriage, and how the POCSO Act safeguards them against abuse. This Christmas, the Smart Volunteer Team organized a heartfelt celebration at Holy Cross Hospice to bring warmth and connection to terminally ill cancer patients. On December 26th, 2024, SMART India Foundation organized a heartfelt visit to Sneha Sadan, an esteemed old-age home in Thrippunithura, to bring festive cheer and emotional support to its 16 elderly women residents. Most of these women face daily challenges due to the lack of family support, and our initiative aimed to remind them that they are loved and valued. The event featured lively entertainment, engaging activities, and heartfelt interactions, all designed to foster a sense of community, joy, and emotional well-being during the Christmas season. This visit was a sincere effort to spread warmth, compassion, and the true spirit of Christmas. SMART India Foundation, in collaboration with the WASH Institute, conducted a two-day sewage treatment survey in Marad Municipality on October 9 and 10, 2024. The survey followed specialized training provided by the WASH Institute, ensuring field teams were equipped with the necessary skills and tools for effective data collection. Throughout the survey, teams visited six households per ward and two industries per day, while also documenting the condition of polluted canals and water bodies. This initiative aimed to assess the current sewage infrastructure and environmental conditions in the municipality, gathering valuable insights to inform future strategies for improving sanitation and addressing water pollution. The findings from this survey will be essential in developing targeted interventions to create a cleaner, healthier environment for the local community.
The SMART India Foundation organized a five-day online workshop on *Research Methodology* from October 21 to 25, designed specifically for Bachelor and Master of Social Work (BSW & MSW) students. Created to build essential research competencies, the workshop aimed to enhance students’ theoretical understanding and practical skills in conducting impactful social work research. Renowned resource persons—Mr. Sibin Antony M.V., Mr. Nibu Toms Ninan, Ms. Priya S. Dev, Mr. Garsho Rahul, and Mr. Zafar Iqbal—guided participants through a wide range of topics including the fundamentals of research, research design and planning, data collection methods, proposal and report writing, and data analysis techniques. The workshop provided valuable exposure to both qualitative and quantitative research approaches, practical tools for sampling, and guidance on structuring and presenting research findings effectively. "Bringing Care, Connection, and Compassion to Our Elders" The SMART India Foundation, in association with JPM Arts and Science College, proudly launched the SATVA” Elder Wellness Campaign, a compassionate initiative dedicated to enhancing the well-being of senior citizens. Conducted across five old age homes in Ernakulam, the campaign focused on addressing the emotional and social challenges often faced by the elderly, such as loneliness and isolation. SATVA aimed to create a nurturing environment where seniors feel heard, valued, and cared for through interactive wellness sessions, heartfelt conversations, and meaningful engagement. The campaign was carried out at Sree Poornathrayeesha Vrida Sadanam in Puthiyakavu, FIH Santhibhavan Convent Old Age Home in Kumbalam Ferry, Edakochi, Brothers of St. Joseph Cottolengo in Palluruthy, Ammakuyil Charitable Trust in Mamangalam, and Abhaya Old Age Home in Kalamassery. This initiative reflects our commitment to building an inclusive society that honours and uplifts its elders by ensuring their later years are filled with dignity, connection, and joy.
The National Seminar on *"Green Social Work: Climate Change and the WASH Sector"* was an enriching platform for students, professionals, and academicians to explore critical issues shaping the future. Held on August 19, 2024, at the Cochin Public School auditorium, the event was jointly organized by the Department of Social Work, KMM College of Arts and Science Thrikkakara, the WASH Institute, and the SMART India Foundation. The seminar aimed to foster sustainable and resilient communities by deepening understanding and engagement with climate-related challenges and the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) sector. Around 250 students participated in the programme, with several students presenting research papers. Thought-provoking sessions led by prominent experts from WRI and BORDA were highlights of the day, significantly enhancing participants’ knowledge and offering valuable moments of insight that left a lasting impression.
On August 15, we had the honour of celebrating with the residents of Bethsaida Old Age Home in Thevara. Organized by the interns of SMART India Foundation, the event included a flag hoisting ceremony, singing of the national anthem, and a range of engaging activities such as dancing, singing, and a mono act performance. The day was filled with joy and patriotism, as residents actively participated, bringing life and energy to the celebration. The event also included a brief speech reflecting on the significance of Independence Day, honouring the sacrifices of our freedom fighters, and emphasizing the values of freedom and unity.
In association with the Department of Social Work, JPM College Kattappana, SMART India Foundation organized an anti-drug campaign titled *UNARV* from July 19 to 25, 2024. The campaign was held across five schools: St. Rita’s High School, Vytilla, Little Flower High School, Njarackal, St. Mary’s UP School, Njarackal, BVHSS Nayarambalam, and Govt. VHSS Njarackal. UNARV, meaning “awakening,” aimed to raise students' awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. The sessions included talks, discussions, and creative activities led by social work students. The program helped students understand the harmful effects of drugs and encouraged healthy lifestyle choices. The campaign was a step towards building a drug-free future by educating and empowering the youth.

Ms Nongmaithem Angel Devi from Professional University, Gujarat, conducted an enriching yoga session for the students of Cottolengo Special School. This session was impactful for their physical health and well-being. Through a series of yoga exercises, the students were engaged in activities that promoted flexibility, strength, and relaxation.
The BODHI 2K24 rural exposure camp held in Thudi, Wayanad, on the 27th and 28th of April, in collaboration with St. Gregorios Teachers Training Institute, Meenagandi, showcased a comprehensive approach to community development. Led by camp coordinators Mr. Sibin Antony M Varghese and Dr. Tomy KO, the camp was a platform for various training programs tailored for the tribal community. These programs addressed immediate needs and focused on long-term sustainability and empowerment. Additionally, cultural programs were organized, showcasing the region's rich heritage, while a mime performance added a creative dimension to the camp’s activities. On March 4th 2024, an empowering women’s self-defense class unfolded in Njarakkal, specifically tailored for the Kudumbashree Women. The session, skillfully conducted by Mrs. Zaina A.V., Head of the Physical Education Department at St. Teresa’s School and a Judo trainer, provided invaluable insights into the basics of Judo and the crucial importance of self-defense.
