I am Eirene Durom from Kochi. I completed a Bachelor of Social Work from Rajagiri College of Social Sciences and a Master of Social Work from the School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore, I took community development as my specialization in Masters. I joined the three-month fellowship program at SMART India Foundation from October to December 2023 was an enriching and transformative journey. Being part of this fellowship I gain invaluable insights and practical skills, significantly enhancing my professional growth. The core team at SMART India Foundation played a crucial role during the fellowship period, offering constant guidance and support, which was instrumental in successfully completing my tasks. The next supporter and source of encouragement throughout the fellowship was my co-fellow, Lijo, whose collaborative spirit and enthusiasm greatly contributed to the successful execution of the programs. One of the highlights of the fellowship was the involvement in coordinating the National Conference on School Social Work. This opportunity allowed me to manage various aspects of the conference, providing a comprehensive learning experience and instilling a sense of pride in my contributions. Additionally, I engaged in and conducted a range of programs and events, further that I am proud of being the first fellow of the SMART India Foundation. This fellowship has developed my skills and a deep sense of accomplishment and pride in being part of such impactful initiatives.

Being part of the Young India Fellowship Program at SMART India Foundation from October 1st to December 31st, 2023, was an enriching experience. Throughout these three months, I gained invaluable fieldwork experience and had the opportunity to connect with different professionals in the sector. The guidance and support provided by the SMART India officials were a great support in my growth, for which I extend my heartfelt gratitude. This fellowship allowed me to practice theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, enhancing my practical skills. A significant milestone of the fellowship was the national conference, where I had the responsibility of managing the entire event. The experiences made my identity as a professional social worker and also I felt I am capable of organizing and conducting programs and events for the betterment of society. I am immensely proud to have been part of the SMART India Foundation.

My name is Karthika KM, and I completed my master’s degree from Indira Gandhi Open University. I joined the SMART India Foundation on August 3rd and worked there for three months, and I can genuinely say it was a transformative experience. During my time at the organization, I learned not only the core principles and values of social work but also how to truly connect with people. I had the privilege of participating in outreach programs, where I interacted with beneficiaries, listened to their stories, and worked to understand their needs. These interactions taught me the true meaning of empathy and the importance of thoughtful advice. One of the most valuable parts of my experience was being part of a team that organized a conference and workshop. This allowed me to develop the skills needed to be a social worker in a professional setting. Ms. Katherine Teresa, the project coordinator, offered invaluable guidance on how to approach our work with professionalism and compassion, something I will carry with me in my future career. Looking back, my time at SMART India Foundation deepened my understanding of both micro and macro-level practices. It gave me a better perspective on how to assess and support individuals based on their needs and capacities. Joining SMART India Foundation was a pivotal moment in my journey as a social worker, and I am grateful for everything I learned.
